The most widely used traditional metal wired braces are made of stainless steel sometimes in combination with titanium, These include conventional braces, where ties are required to hold the arch wire in place, and newer self-tying (brackets. Titanium braces resemble stainless steel braces but are lighter and just as strong. They are more expensive than stainless steel braces. People with allergies to the nickel in steel often choose titanium braces. Clear brackets for braces are made from a ceramic composite. No matter what shade your natural tooth color is, they blend in very easily and are not very noticeable. The ceramic brackets work in the same way metal braces do, they don't fall off or crack easily, which makes them a good option for normal orthodontic treatments. Clear elastic ties and white metal ties are available to be used with these clear braces to help keep the appliances less conspicuous. There are foods that loosen, break or bend wires and bands when you are wearing braces. So avoid hard foods such as nuts and hard cookies. Fruits and vegetables such as apples and carrots should be chopped into small pieces before eating to reduce the stress on your braces. Sticky foods are to be avoided strictly such as caramels, toffees, muesli or fruit bars and chewing gums. Habits such as nail biting, unnatural tongue thrusting, nervous picking pencil chewing and pencil chewing and at your wires can also break braces. Always be aware of these and make an effort to stop them. The important fact to remember is that damaged braces mean extra appointments, increase of treatment time and inconveniences.
