This classic hotel in Hollywood, California wanted to add new luxury villas with lush landscaping. But high water-consuming showers and landscaping consumed too much water in this arid part of the country. Wahaso was asked to help design and build a system that could harvest the shower and sink water to use for irrigation.System Type: Greywater for IrrigationCommissioning Date: January 2012Challenge: Tough water regulations in Los Angeles and all of California restrict the use on any water source other than municipally certified drinking water for landscape irrigation. To gain approval from the city and the county health department, the system would need to process the greywater to a very high quality level, clean and free of harmful pathogens.Solution: Working with partner Jonny Appleseed Landscaping, Wahaso designed a system to harvest sink and shower water (greywater) for irrigation. Raw greywater is processed through Wahaso's greywater skid where it is filtered and sanitized using chlorine. The on-site treated non-potable water is then stored in a 4,200 fiberglass tank where it is staged for irrigation. Results: Wahaso's system is one of the first commercial greywater processing systems approved in the City of Los Angeles. The system saves an estimated 200,000 per month of municipal drinking water to keep the landscaping lush. This same system is currently being tested for certification under the new National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) 350 standards for commercial gray water harvesting.
