Diclofenac is mainly used for managing pain associated with conditions like headaches, musculoskeletal aches, dental aches, and rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, osteoarthritis, and dysmenorrhea (painful menstrual periods).
Diclofenac also brings relief from acute pain due to injuries or surgery, and can ease menstrual cramps and migraine headaches.
How Diclofenac works
Diclofenac is a type of analgesic known as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
It works by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzyme, which in turn reduces the production of prostaglandins—chemicals that play a key role in triggering pain and inflammation.
Diclofenac takes 20 to 30 minutes to work if you take it as tablets or capsules. Suppositories take a few hours to work.
