The life in AYURVEDA is conceived as the union of body, senses, mind and soul. The living man or human being is a conglomeration of three humours (VATA, PITTA AND KAPHA), seven basic tissues ( RASA, RAKTA, MANSA, MEDA, ASTHI, MAJJA, AND SHUKRA ) and the waste product of body (such as FEASES, URINE AND SWEAT). Thus the total body matrix of a human being comprises of humours, the tissues and the waste products of the body. The growth and decay of this body matrix and its constituents revolve around food which gets processed into humours, tissues and wastes. Ingestion, Digestion, Absorption, Assimilation and Metabolism of food have an interplay in health and disease which are significantly affected by physiological mechanisms as well as by bio-fire (AGNI).
According to Ayurveda all the objects in the universe including the human body are composed of FIVE basic elements (Panchmahabhutas) namely 1. Earth, 2. Water, 3. Fire, 4. Air, and 5. Vacuum (ether). There is a balanced condensation of these elements in different proportions to suit the needs and requirements of the different structures and functions of the body matrix and its parts. The growth and development of body matrix depends on the nutrition i.e. food. The food in turn, is composed of the above five elements, which is replenish or nourish the various parts of the body by the action bio-fire (Agni). The tissues of the body are structural where as humours are the physiological entities, derived from different combinations and permutations of PANCHMAHABHUTAS.
In Ayurveda health is considered as a balance between body, mind, and consciousness. This system recognize three doshas, seven dhatus, three malas and agni. And disease is the condition of disharmony between any of these factors
Market size of Ayurveda and Siddha medicine is approximately Rs. 3505 crores. The total global market is of size of 62 billion $, of which India accounts for 1 billion $. Though in India, since ancient times the herbs and herbal medicines are our heritage, still we account for a low percentage of the world market. This can be understood only if this sector is studied with respect of different units operating in it, the type of technology, embedded in them and the scope of expansion and improvement.
Vaidyas classifies disease and disorders in to 4448 types. Each of these diseases or disorders are belived to have 64 commonly prescribed types of remedies. There are more than 3,50,000 herbal formulas used in this system. Around 4,000 plants are used commonly and another 2000 on rare situation.
The number of registered manufacturing units of Ayurveda and Siddha is very large. There are around 7,000 registered manufacturing units. The industry has evolved from its past image. Initially only vaidyas used to prepare medicines at home with help of mortar and pestle. Later on few pharmacies started preparing around 400 to 600 classical perpetrations. Then came the modern face of the industry where focus shifted to the consumer sector. These industries concentrated on few medicines, which are widely used and easier and simple to prepare, and also other herbal products like health supplements, beauty care and other cosmetic products.
Now there has been sophistication in drug design. The form in which drug is now available has also changed. Now a days it is available in the form of liquids & orals, tablets, powders, extracts, medicated wines, alkalis, medicinal salts, distilled starches, ointments, jams, burnt products, medicated oils with special processing regimens etc.
The Ayurvedic manufacturing units have to get the manufacturing license from the Government controlling body (FDA) to manufacture Ayurvedic medicines. The manufacturing process must be as per the GMP notifications and schedule ”T” of Drugs and Cosmetic Act 1940 and rules their under. The Govt. has formulated the general guidelines and issued for countering misleading and exaggerated advertisements of these products.
The license for manufacture of Ayurvedic medicines are issued under Drugs and Cosmetic Act 1940, as per the requirement by the law raw materials used in manufacturing are identified and tested for their genuineness and record of such tests and methods are maintained. There are also legal requirements in terms of labeling, packing etc.
